N. Ill. man sentenced to 62 years for girl’s death
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois man has been sentenced to 62 years in prison for the 2011 death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter.
The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/1iY79wI ) Duran Johnson was sentenced Wednesday for the murder of Kaitlyn Head.
Judge Gary Pumilia said during the hearing he will never understand how Johnson “could inflict the pain and punishment and torture you inflicted on that child.”
Prosecutors say the toddler was beaten, starved and forced to perform extreme exercises before she died.
The girl’s mother, Melanie Grant, pleaded guilty in August to aggravated battery and endangering the life of a child charges in exchange for a 20-year sentence.
Johnson was convicted of murder in November.
On Wednesday he apologized and said he didn’t know why he was being punished.
