City manager finalist takes Edinburg position
One of three finalists for the position of Brownsville city manager has accepted the same job in Edinburg.
Pharr City Manager Juan Guerra was selected by the Edinburg City Council on Friday during a special meeting. He had joined Kingsville City Manager Jesus A. Garza and Coppell City Manager Noel Bernal at a community meet-and-greet with Brownsville city manager finalists earlier this month.
Brownsville At-Large “B” Commissioner Rose Gowen, who led the city manager search committee, said she cannot discuss candidate rankings until the City Commission votes on a contract with their top pick on Tuesday.
“The choice was made, and that gave way for legal and the search company to create and negotiate the contract,” she said. “We don’t want to announce a name unless it’s signed, sealed and delivered. That will be completed next Tuesday.”
While she couldn’t comment on the current city manager selection, Gowen said candidates generally are notified if they will not be offered a contract. She added that the commission and search committee members have been pleased with the selection process.
"We’re all very excited to complete the process on Tuesday,” she said.
Former Brownsville City Manager Charlie Cabler retired in October 2017, and the first search concluded in July after two of four finalists withdrew their names from consideration.
Guerra will replace former Pharr City Manager Pilar Rodriguez, who resigned in September.
