TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) _ Val Whiting had 25 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 9 Stanford past Arizona State 86-76 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Thursday night.
Stanford (22-5 overall, 12-3 Pac-10) took a 31-30 lead at halftime, then shot 53.3 percent from the field in the second half (16 of 30) while holding Arizona State (16-7, 9-6) to 33 percent shooting (27 of 81) to pull away.
Chris MacMurdo added 15 points and Kate Paye had 12 and six assists.
Arizona State’s Jovonne Smith scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds. Lisa Salsman added 18 points.
Arizona State cut the second half lead to 55-51 with 11 minutes left, but never got closer after coach Maura McHugh was ejected after receiving her second technical foul.
