3 Drown in South Africa Flooding
DURBAN, South Africa (AP) _ Three people drowned and hundreds were left homeless Tuesday after torrential rains flooded the Indian Ocean province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The Durban region appeared to be worst hit, with one man drowning after the bus he was riding in was submerged, said Director Bala Naidoo, police spokesman.
Two other people drowned in Glen Anil, just north of Durban.
In the town of Tongaat about 30 miles north of Durban, a hospital ambulance was crushed by a falling tree, and a paramedic suffered spinal injuries.
About four inches of rain fell in ten hours, and it was still raining as night fell. Some people were l trapped in their homes in waist-deep water, said Paul Beffis of the National Sea Rescue Institute.
Shops and flats on Durban’s beachfront were flooded as the storm surf lashed the paved area.
