YouTube star from Greenwich has fans concerned

February 9, 2019

GREENWICH — A popular YouTube star, who has a residence in Greenwich, has been drawing concerns from fans after posting recent videos of her that show her dangerously thin.

Eugenia Cooney, 24, posted recently on Twitter that she was alive, and said she was taking time from social media. Fans of her YouTube videos expressed worries that she had died of an eating disorder.

The Greenwich Police Department has also weighed in, while following protocols on privacy around health issues.

A YouTube poster said Cooper “was dying before our eyes,” citing what appeared to her her alarmingly thin body in a video Cooper released earlier in the year. A Twitter commenter, citing the same video, wrote “you need to go to the emergency room ASAP.” Questions about her health status have been flying all over the Internet.

Cooper posted on Twitter Jan. 28, “I am alive and definitely not dead.”

Cooper has over a million YouTube subscribers, so her fans were horrified at her weight loss in recent months. According to various Reddit threads, some fans had been calling Greenwich police to carry out a “welfare check” on the YouTube star, who has a house in backcountry Greenwich.

Greenwich Police Captain Kraig Gray wrote in an email Saturday, “We have done our duty.” Citing privacy concerns, he said authorities could not elaborate further.

Greenwich police sent out a Tweet on Saturday: “The Greenwich Police Department is aware of the online communities concerns for Eugenia but please respect her privacy and wishes. Please consider her last twitter posts as her current statement on her intentions regarding her public life. Thank You.”

The last Tweet from Cooper stated: “Hey guys! I’ve been offline for a while and I’m sooo sorry if I worried anyone! That was not my intention at all. I’ve just been taken a much needed break from the negativity and having some positive time offline. I’ll be back soon! :)”

On her YouTube programming, Cooper delves into the subcultures of gaming and goth fashion. She talks about make-up and chats with family members. On Instagram, she has over 500,000 followers and on Twitter, she has 140,000 followers.

Fans have been expressing concerns about her weight since 2017.

There was no answer to a telephone call to the residence Saturday. A Tweet seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The concerns about Cooper are unrelated to a recent homicide investigation involving a woman, Valerie Reyes, who was found dead in Greenwich on Feb. 5. That investigation is ongoing.
