Wyoming 75, San Jose St. 59

January 24, 1997

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) _ Jeron Roberts added 23 points as Wyoming defeated San Jose State 75-59 on Thursday.

Wyoming (6-10, 2-3 Western Athletic Conference) won the game at the free throw line, hitting 28-of-38 attempts. But the Cowboys were also red-hot from the field, shooting 58 percent.

San Jose State (9-6, 1-4 WAC) led 15-13 at the 11:49 mark of the first half, following Graeme Anstey bucket. But that was the last time the Spartans would lead.

Wyoming held a 35-28 advantage at the half.

San Jose tried to get back in the game following some foul trouble with Wyoming’s Gregg Sawyer.

Olivier Saint-Jean narrowed the gap to 42-72, but the Cowboys _ led by Roberts and HL Coleman _ went on a 10-3 run that pushed the lead to 57-45 with 7:49 to go. From there, the Spartans never got closer than 10.

The loss spoiled a brilliant performance by Saint-Jean, who led all scorers with 31 points. The only other Spartan in double figures was Tito Addison, who added 10.

The Cowboys made up for the loss of LaDrell Whitehead, the WAC’s leading scorer, by using a balanced performance and excellent inside play by Derek Washington.

Whitehead, who was averaging 25 points a game, was benched for the season with an elbow injury sustained in last week’s game against Hawaii.

Coleman had 19 points and was 11-of-13 from the free throw line for Wyoming. Sawyer added 13 and Washington had a season-high 12 points.
