HAMBURG, West Germany (AP) _ The West German subsidiary of Exxon Corp. announced Tuesday it will close refineries in Hamburg and Cologne, putting 800 employees out of work.

Esso AG of West Germany said the shutdowns, scheduled for late next year, reflected the current world oil surplus and reduced consumer demand.

The closure of the crude oil refinery in this northern port city would affect 450 workers. About 350 employees will be affected by the shutdown of Esso's oil products plant in Cologne, a major Rhineland city.

Esso said it would continue to operate its lubricating-oil plant and technical laboratory in Hamburg.
