Singer Hospitalized, Plans Stay At Betty Ford Clinic, Relative Says
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Rock ‘n’ roller Jerry Lee Lewis has been hospitalized and will go to the Betty Ford Clinic for treatment of an addiction to pain killers, his father- in-law said today.
Bob McCarver, father of Lewis’ estranged wife, Kerrie Lewis, said the 50- year-old singer was in a hospital in eastern Tennessee and planned to leave today.
The entertainer known for such hits as ″Great Balls of Fire″ and ″Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On″ planned to the Palm Springs, Calif., clinic by Friday, Carver said.
″He’s been taking pain medication for his shoulder and leg,″ McCarver said. ″They’re old injuries.″
Carver said his 24-year-old daughter visited Lewis in the hospital, which he did not identify, and told Carver that Lewis ″is eating good and looks good.″
″It’s his choice he wants to go,″ Carver said. ″Hopefully we’ll have him out for his show in Los Angeles by Dec. 31.″
