Fitchburg State Softball Coach MacDonald Earns 100th Victory
BUZZARDS BAY -- The Fitchburg State University softball team swept host Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 11-0 and 9-0, in MASCAC action on Saturday to give head coach Merry MacDonald her 100th career coaching victory.
In the early contest, Fitchburg State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as junior McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass.) connected on a two-run homer to center field that plated senior Maddie Medina.
The Falcons (12-6, 2-0 MASCAC) pulled farther away in the top of the fourth when senior Nicole Sylvester laced a two-run double to left field, while classmate Michelle LeBlanc, of Ashburnham, added a two-run single to center. Freshman Olivia Pietersen, freshman Audrey Johnson, of Fitchburg, senior Hayley McCarthy and Medina added RBI base hits in the frame, resulting in the 11-0 final.
Mikayla Harnois earned the victory for Fitchburg State, giving up just three hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
In the later game, Fitchburg State grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Lambert launched her second two-run home run of the day before freshman Lundyn Forcier added an RBI single down the left-field line.
The Falcons made it 7-0 in the top half of the fourth when freshman Courtney Luker delivered a run scoring single, and Lambert followed with a two-run double.
Fitchburg State secured the sweep in the fifth, with Forcier ripping an RBI triple to center that plated Johnson. Forcier later crossed the plate on a throwing miscue for the game’s final run.
Emma Campbell picked up the win, allowing just one hit in three innings of relief.
Up next, Fitchburg State will host Curry College for a Wednesday doubleheader, starting at 3:30 p.m.
