NCA Survey Shows Beef Prices Rising

DENVER (AP) _ The national average price of five cuts of beef rose 6 cents a pound in the past month and was 11 cents higher than a year ago, according to the latest 19-city survey by the National Cattlemen’s Association.

The national average was $2.46 a pound. The lowest five-cut average was $1.92 a pound at Des Moines, Iowa, while Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City shared the highest cost at $2.87 a pound.

The NCA said the five-cut average was up in nine cities, down in nine and unchanged in one.

The cuts and their national average price per pound include ground beef at $1.37, round steak $2.33, sirloin steak $2.96, T-bone steak $4.05 and chuck roast $1.58.

The increase was attributed to tightened beef supplies and a reduction in beef price featuring by grocers. The NCA said beef featuring often decreases during Lent.
