4 inmates, 5 attackers killed at Mexico prison
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Five gunmen and four inmates are dead in southern Mexico after an attack on a prison.
Prosecutors in the southern state of Guerrero said a group of six gunmen managed to enter the facility and opened fire, killing four inmates.
They then opened fire on guards who returned fire, killing five gunmen and wounding the other.
One guard was wounded. The gunmen apparently gained entry to the prison by telling a guard at the gate that they were officials bringing in a prisoner.
Mexican drug gangs have been known to assassinate members of rival gangs in prison, but have also been known to storm prisons to break out members of their own group.
