Protest Keeps 50 Percent of Trucks off Highways
ROME (AP) _ Truckers caused widespread traffic jams when they parked their vehicles along the roads to protest the 38 mph speed limit for trucks on highways and state roads.
Cars can go up to 81 mph on highways. The truckers have not said by how much they want the limit raised.
The news agency ANSA quoted officials as saying highway truck traffic was down 50 percent during the protest Monday.
Extensive jams were reported on the Turin-Milan and Turin Piacenza highways, and officials reported a long line of trucks near the Italian border with France.
It was the truckers’ second protest in three months over the speed limit. Truckers also want the government to pass on to motorists the savings from lower oil prices on the international market.
