HOMELESS COUNT

A new federal report says the number of people living on the streets in Los Angeles and San Diego, two epicenters of a West Coast homelessness crisis, fell this year, suggesting possible success in those cities’ efforts to combat the problem. Homelessness overall was up slightly across the country, although the report did not provide a complete picture of the problem. The reason: Several areas with large homeless populations, including San Francisco, Portland and Orange County, Calif., did not report numbers for 2018. By Geoff Mulvihill. SCI-PLANET FAROUT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. _ Astronomers have spotted the farthest known object in our solar system _ and they’ve nicknamed the pink cosmic body “Farout.” The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center announced the discovery Monday. The astronomers spied the dwarf planet in November using a telescope in Hawaii. SENT: 130 words.

BIG ISLAND ELECTRICITY

HILO, Hawaii _ A Big Island utility proposed raising base rates by 3.4 percent to generate $13.4 million in additional revenue. Hawaii Electric Light Co. announced last week the proposal that aims to fund grid modernization efforts, repairs to facilities damaged by the Kilauea volcano eruption and other improvements to the electric system, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported. SCABIES OUTBREAK-KONA HOSPITAL

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii _ All staff members at a Big Island hospital have been treated for scabies following an outbreak of the contagious skin disease, officials said. Staff members were treated whether they were showing symptoms or not after the disease was identified last month, Kona Community Hospital spokeswoman Judy Donovan told West Hawaii Today. MISSISSIPPI VALLY ST-HAWAII

HONOLULU _ Drew Buggs made 6 of 7 from the field and finished with 13 points and six assists to help Hawaii beat Mississippi Valley State 76-51 on Sunday night. Brocke Stepteau and Zigmars Raimo had 12 points apiece and Eddie Stansberry _ who made his first career start for the Rainbow Warriors _ scored 11. Jack Purchase added seven points and a career-high 13 rebounds. SENT: 180 words.
