Fire Kills Four Inmates in Milan Prison
MILAN, Italy (AP) _ A fire apparently set by inmates killed four prisoners Sunday at San Vittore Prison, authorities said.
Prison officials said they believe an Egyptian and Tunisian set fire to their beds in the cell they shared with two Italian inmates.
Other prisoners set off a fire alarm shortly after Saturday midnight, but officials said firefighters could not enter the blazing cell because the door was barricaded with beds and furniture.
Ahmed Said, 28, of Cairo, and Adel Mithali, 24, of Tunis, were pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital and their cellmates, who were not identified, were dead when firefighters entered the cell, said officials.
Officials, who demanded anonymity, said Said tried to burn a mattress last week at another prison where he was taken for a pretrial hearing. He was charged with drug trafficking and minor crimes.
