18th-Century Golf Club Sold

July 14, 1992

LONDON (AP) _ A rare, 18th-century golf club, lately used as a child’s plaything and found in a garden shed, sold for $178,300 at a Sotheby’s sale in Scotland on Monday, the auction house said.

A London dealer bought the club on behalf of the Valderrama Golf Club in Soto Grande, Spain, which will display it in its museum, Sotheby’s spokesman Christopher Proudlove said after the sale in Musselburgh, Scotland.

He said the anonymous seller had not realized the value of the club, which was made between 1680 and 1720.

David Neech, Sotheby’s specialist in golfing memorabilia, said it was amazing the club survived.

″The owner told me his children used to play with it in the garden.″

The club, with a large, curved blade and ash shaft, belonged to the owner’s father.
