KUMASI, Ghana (AP) _ South Africa became the first nation to advance to the quarterfinals of the African Cup, beating Congo 1-0 Thursday night on Shaun Bartlett’s goal in the final minute of the first half.

South Africa (2-0) leads Group B of the 16-nation tournament with six points, followed by Algeria (0-0-1), Congo (0-1-1) and Gabon (0-1). The top two teams advance from each of the four groups.

At Accra, Ghana beat Togo 2-0 in Group A when Kwame Ayew scored in the 27th minute and Addo Otto connected about 10 minutes later. Ayew’s goal came when goalkeeper Kossi Agassa fumbled his long shot.

Ghana (1-0-1) leads Group A with four points, followed by Cameroon and Ivory Coast (each 0-0-1) and Togo (0-1-1).
