School bus crashes after road collapses

September 27, 2018

CRUM — A bus driver and his son escaped with only minor injuries after a portion of Upper Silver Creek gave way, causing a Wayne County school bus to slide over the bank and into a creek.

According to Wayne County Schools Director of Transportation David Sammons, the driver had not yet started his morning run when the bus crashed early Tuesday morning. Both the driver and his son left the scene with no major injuries.

“Believe it or not, there was little to no damage done to the bus. The only thing we found was an air line on the bus that needed replaced,” Sammons said. “Of course, we will give it a detailed inspection before we put it back on the road.”

Even though no one was seriously injured, Sammons said knowing emergency procedures while riding a bus is vital for both drivers and passengers if they are not familiar with them already.

He said students should pay close attention when emergency drills take place, and that Wayne County students will learn more about promoting school bus safety in October as part of National School Bus Safety Month.

Sammons said a replacement bus was sent to complete the route and students on that run were still able to get to school Tuesday morning.
