AMHERST, Mass. (AP) _ Injured freshman guard Andre Burks has been suspended from the Massachusetts team following his arraignment on assault and battery charges.
Burks, 19, of Baton Rouge, La., pleaded innocent and was released on his own recognizance following his arraignment Monday in Northampton District Court in the Saturday night incident outside his dorm room involving a girlfriend.
The 19-year-old woman, who said she had been dating Burks for three months, said he slammed her head into a cinder block wall after they argued.
``I’m not going to say anything about it and Andre is not going to say anything about it,″ said Burks’ lawyer, Richard Howland.
Coach John Calipari did not return calls to his home, but a university spokeswoman said he suspended Burks pending the outcome of the court case.
Burks has not played since suffering a knee injury on Jan. 3.
Three weeks ago Calipari suspended senior guard Mike Williams for the remainder of the season for unspecified disciplinary reasons. The Minutemen (25-4) are at home Thursday night against Temple in the championship game of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
