Obama wishes Merkel speedy recovery after injury
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama has wished German Chancellor Angela Merkel a speedy recovery after her recent skiing accident.
During a conversation Wednesday, he also congratulated Merkel on forming a new Cabinet.
The 59-year-old German leader broke her pelvis after falling during an annual holiday ski outing in the Swiss Alps. A spokesman disclosed the injury earlier this week. It requires Merkel to rest for a few weeks, though she’ll continue to preside over Cabinet and government meetings and use a walking aid to get around.
The White House says Obama and Merkel noted the agenda that awaits them this year, including negotiations toward a proposed free-trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union, and a NATO summit in the spring.
Obama also invited Merkel to visit Washington in the coming months.
