‘Fun Home’: Poignant family drama unfolds in Tony-winning musical
A woman loses her father unexpectedly and tries to unlock the mysteries surrounding his life in “Fun Home.” The Tony-winning musical will be onstage at The White Plains Performing Arts Center, Friday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 28.
Alison, a graphic artist, is at the heart of this engaging and unusual coming-of-age tale. The audience gets to know her at different stages of her life. Her father, Bruce, is a troubled yet brilliant man, with secrets that impact Alison, as well as the rest of the family.
“Fun Home” won five Tonys, including Best Musical, and is based on Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir. A successful cartoonist, Bechdel created it to share how she tried to understand her family’s dynamics and her own sexuality.
Three Broadway veterans lead the cast in this production, under the direction of Amy Griffin. Among them is Tony Award nominee Robert Cuccioli, who plays Alison’s father and has been seen in “Jekyll & Hyde” and “Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark.” Lauren Cohn (“Mamma Mia”) portrays Alison, while Rita Harvey, seen in “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Phantom of the Opera,” plays Alison’s mother.
