May 8, 2018

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man who struck and injured a police officer with a car has been sentenced to up to 5 ½ years in prison.

The Lowell Sun reports that 24-year-old John Miller was sentenced to 4 ½ to 5 ½ years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors say the Lowell man struck a detective in a gas station parking lot in August. Authorities say Miller drove about 25 feet with the detective on the hood off the car before he was “tossed off.”

Miller’s attorney said his client suffered from mental illness.

As part of sentencing, Miller must undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations while he is serving two years’ probation.
