Idaho St. 52, Mesa St. 17
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) _ Syvester Jones scored three touchdowns, including a 72-yard run, as Idaho State routed Mesa State 52-17 Saturday night.
Jones, a senior starting his first game at tailback, rushed for 161 yards. He scored with two minutes left in the first quarter on a 64-yard screen pass from Paul Putnam. The Bengals scored 30 seconds later when Marcus Teal picked up a punt blocked by Don Dwyer and ran 28 yards.
Mesa State came back on a 47-yard field goal by Richie Hahn’s 47-yard field goal following a 40-yard kickoff return by Bobbie Beaudoin.
But Idaho State took a 24-3 lead when Jones scored on a 26-yard run. He set up the score on three carries for 52 yards.
Mesa State closed out the half with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jake Lougue to Troy Funk.
Idaho State scored in the third quarter on a 15-yard reception by Rommie Wheeler. The Bengals dominated the fourth period with three more touchdowns, including Jones’ 72-yard run.
