Apartment Fire Kills Father, Sons
CEDAR MILL, Ore. (AP) _ A father and two sons died early Sunday when their apartment was engulfed by fire in this suburb northwest of Portland, a fire official said. Three other family members escaped.
The bodies of Roy Hopkins, 30, and his sons Brian, 8, and Jason, 7, were found huddled together in one of the apartment’s two bedrooms, said Tualatin Valley Fire and Fire and Rescue spokesman Jim Washburn.
A third son, 4-year-old Thomas; Roy Hopkins’ mother, Lois Elizabeth McCullagh, 53; and her 56-year-old husband, John, escaped through a ground- floor bedroom window. Lois McCullagh was in fair condition at St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center, where she was being treated for smoke inhalation and a broken ankle.
″If they had gone through the apartment, rather than out the window, I think we’d be looking at six people dead, rather than just three,″ said Washburn.
Noise from the fire, which broke out around 5:30 a.m., woke up John McCullagh, Washburn said. McCullagh forced his wife and grandson out the window, then climbed out after them.
The cause of the fire was not known.
