Boxer Tony Tubbs Pleads Guilty

November 9, 2000

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Former heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs pleaded guilty Thursday to trafficking in cocaine and was sentenced to two months in jail, three years of probation and drug testing.

The 41-year-old Tubbs also was ordered Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Steven Martin to do 300 hours of community service.

Tubbs had pleaded guilty to the drug charge in October, then withdrew the plea after learning he would be required to go to a county jail for four to six months of drug treatment. Tubbs wanted a less-stringent treatment program.

He was scheduled for trial Thursday, but avoided it by entering the new guilty plea. The judge ordered Tubbs to undergo regular drug testing and to submit to any drug treatment programs his counselors recommend.

Tubbs could have received up to a year had he been convicted of the charge.

He was the WBA champion from April 1985 to January 1986.
