CHRISTIANA, Del. (AP) — Witnesses say lightning struck a lifeguard at a Delaware apartment complex's pool.

The News Journal reports the lifeguard was taken to a hospital but his name and condition weren't available. Residents say the lightning also triggered fire alarms Monday afternoon.

National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Shafer says there was lighting close by then.

Forty-one-year-old Clinton Robertson says he was watching the storm from his apartment window when he saw the lighting strike near a tree between the pool and an apartment building and spread in several directions. He says the lifeguard was standing by the pool when it struck and ran into the bathroom afterward.

Thirty-nine-year-old Amol Polke says there were sparks in the vents but firefighters who inspected the apartment building didn't find evidence of a fire.
