Bexar Sheriff’s Office to put reserve deputies at rural schools
Bexar County reserve deputies will begin patrolling East Central ISD and Southwest ISD schools, Sheriff Javier Salazar announced Thursday.
The officers will work with the two rural districts’ own police departments, and might be stationed inside schools or patrolling their perimeters, Salazar said at a press conference.
Having deputies on campus will cut the department’s response time in case of an emergency, and increase the number of officers with a presence at schools, he said. Their duties will be “very fluid,” he said, but confined to security efforts.
The districts are the first members of the “BCSO School Resource Reserve Deputy Program,” which could expand in the future to other Bexar County districts, Salazar said. Reserve deputies are volunteers who are licensed peace officers.
