Cuban Jump Medalist Wins in Athina
ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ Javier Sotomayor, winner of the Olympic high jump silver medal following his reinstatement from a drug ban, won his specialty at an indoor meet Wednesday.
The world record-holder from Cuba cleared 7 feet, 7 inches, on his third attempt to win at Athina 2001. He beat Yugoslavia’s Dragutin Topic and Russian Jaroslav Rybakov, who each cleared 7-5 3/4.
Sotomayor holds the world indoor record of 7-11 1/2 and the world outdoor record of 8-0 1/2.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Ivan Pedroso of Cuba won the long jump at 27-3 1/4, and Americans Tim Montgomery and Greg Saddler finished 1-2 in the 60 meters. Montgomery was timed at 6.53 seconds and Saddler at 6.56.
In the women’s pole vault, Russia’s Svetlana Feofanova cleared 15-3, breaking her European record set 10 days ago at Dortmund, Germany. But she failed to beat the world mark of 15-5 set by Olympic champion Stacy Dragila last week at Pocatello, Idaho.
