Clouds Lie Over Much of Country, Rain in East
Undated (AP) _ Clouds blanketed much of the country today as rain and gusty wind edged toward the Northeast and showers sprinkled parts of the Midwest.
Cool air was drifting southeast across the Plains as showers were forecast in Kansas and Oklahoma as well as from the Ohio and Tennessee valleys south into Alabama.
Highs in the 50s and 60s were expected across much of the Midwest, with temperatures reaching the 70s in the Plains states and the 80s from the Rockies west into California.
Moist air flowing in from the Gulf could bring heavy rain to the Southeast, where highs in the 60s and 70s were expected.
Farther north, gusty ocean winds pressed north along the coast from the Mid Atlantic states into New England, and rain was possible. Highs were likely to reach the 60s in most areas.
It would be a second day of rough weather for some areas. In Virginia, northbound traffic on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel in Newport News was halted for nearly 11 hours Thursday after heavy winds and high waves ripped nine barges loose from a tugboat and drove them into the span.
Unseasonably warm weather was predicted for the Pacific Northwest, with temperatures in the 70s forecast along the coast and highs in the 90s expected inland.
The nation’s hot spot Thursday was Bullhead City, Ariz., with an afternoon high of 103 degrees.
