Get to Know: Robert Rygg
Name: Robert Rygg
Where are you from? Utah
Occupation: Retired after 21 years in the Navy, now student teaching while obtaining a teaching degree from Old Dominion University in Virginia.
What do you enjoy about your job? “I love working with the students. I like learning about their personalities. It’s fun. It’s something different every day. You feel so alive when you’re talking to them and connecting with them. It gives your life a purpose you just don’t get with other jobs.”
What brought you to Skagit County? The military. “I was stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island from 2004 to 2009.”
What do you like about living in Skagit County? “It’s more laid-back and not as fast-paced as the city. The people here are friendly.”
What are your hobbies? “I like mountain biking, kayak fishing and camping with my wife and daughter.”
What is your spirit animal? An eagle. “I like the idea of freedom.”
Where is the farthest you’ve traveled? Has been around to places such as Iraq, Djibouti, Dubai, Singapore and the Seychelles.
Favorite Book: “’Mind Power for the 21st Century.’ That book, along with some others, really just helped me with visualizing goals and helped me get started to achieve the life I wanted.”
Who do you admire and why? “My grandfather on my mom’s side. He was a middle school English teacher and I looked up to him. He was honest and you knew he cared about you. He would give you his full attention when talking to you, and he inspired me to want to be a teacher.”
