SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Outfielder Henry Rodriguez, sent outright by the Montreal Expos to Triple-A Ottawa last week, opted Monday to become a free agent rather than report to the minors.

Rodriguez, who batted .050 (1-for-20) in 20 games with four RBIs and four runs scored for Montreal this season, was made expendable after the Expos purchased outfielder Troy O'Leary's contract from Ottawa last Wednesday.

Rodriguez, who was in his second stint with the Expos, has also played with Los Angeles, the Chicago Cubs, Florida and the New York Yankees during his 11 major league seasons. His best year came in 1996 with the Expos, when he hit .276 with 36 homers and 103 RBIs and was a member of the NL All-Star team.
