August 24, 2018

Pitt-Greensburg fired former California (Pa.) star runner Julie Friend as its new cross-country coach.

Pitt-Greensburg found someone with NCAA championship experience as its new cross country coach, hiring former Cal (Pa.) star runner Julie Friend on Monday.

A Uniontown native, Friend was a five-time All-American at Cal and was named athlete of the year in both the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s Atlantic Region in 2017, her redshirt senior season. She won the individual title at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships and placed 22nd at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

She was the first cross country All-American and first NCAA regional champion in Cal history.

Friend qualified for the 2018 United States Track and Field Championship and led Cal to the NCAA cross country championships twice.

Friend, who has worked as a volunteer assistant at Uniontown since 2013, replaces Michael Gentile as Pitt-Greensburg coach.
