Yale is No Longer the Route to Southern Methodist University
UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas (AP) _ Southern Methodist students in the future won’t have to go to Yale to get to SMU.
The University Park council Tuesday approved a request from Southern Methodist University to change the name of Yale Boulevard to SMU Boulevard along a three-block stretch west of North Central Expressway, a major north- south route through Dallas.
Green expressway-exit signs put Yale on top with SMU underneath. University Park is an island city within Dallas.
The new signs should be up by April 1, city officials said.
″I think it’s appropriate to make the change,″ said Mayor Barbara Hitzelberger, a member of SMU’s class of 1948.
″I really wanted to name it the University of Texas Boulevard,″ said Pete Goldman the only non-SMU graduate on the council. ″But I didn’t get much consensus from the other four.″
