May 12, 2019

Grampo asked, putting down las tenazas and eating his almond.

“Son-in-law se dice ‘yerno’, Canutito replied.

“Bueno, entonces, how do you say ‘daughter-in-law’ in English?” Grampo asked.

“That would be ‘nuera’,” Canutito said.

“And why would she be called ‘nuera’, m’hijo?” Grampo asked him.

“Yo no sé, Grampo,” Canutito said. “Why would a she be called ‘nuera’?”

“Because ella ‘no-era’ the one que I wanted para mi hijo,” Grampo said smiling.

“I get it!” Canutito replied. “Nuera sounds como no-era.”

“Ahora tú me dices un joke, m’hijo,” Grampo challenged him.

“Bueno,” Canutito perked up, “Yo voy a decirle un ‘knock-knock’ joke, Grampo. Cuando yo diga ‘knock-knock’, you have to ask me ‘who is it?’, y luego I will tell you una cosa. Do you think que you can do it?”

“Play con Grama first, m’hijo; y luego I will know qué hacer.”

Canutito turned to Grama Cuca and said: “Bueno Grama, vamos a enseñarle how it is done.” Hizo pause por un momento and then he said to her: “Grama, knock-knock.”

Grama respondió: “Who is it?”

Canutito said: “Banana.”

Grama then asked: “Banana who?”

Luego, Canutito asked her, knock-knock.”

Grama respondió: “¿Quién es?”

Canutito said: “Banana.”

Entonces, Grama then asked: “Banana who?”

Luego, Canutito asked her, knock-knock.”

Grama answered: “¿Quién es?”

Canutito said: “Orange.”

Entonces, Grama then asked: “Orange who?”

Canutito said: “Orange you glad que yo no dije ‘banana’?”

Grama snickered, “¡Ajá, já, já! Eso es pretty good, m’hijo.”

Grampo Caralampio had been listening con mucho cuidado. He thought que now sí sabía cómo jugar a ’knock-knock.

Canutito got ready. He turned to Grampo y le preguntó: “Grampo, knock-knock.”

Todo proud, Grampo replied: “Banana.”

Canutito estaba un poco confused por un segundo so he said: “No, Grampo, you are supposed to preguntarme ’who is it?”

Grampo repeated: “Banana.”

Canutito shook his head y le repitió: “Grampo, cuando yo le digo: ‘knock-knock’ usted tiene que preguntarme ‘¿quién es?’ y luego yo le digo: ‘banana’. Do you think que entiende ahora? Let’s try it otra vez: Knock-knock.”

Grampo said: “Banana!”

“¡No, Grampo!” Canutito answered. “Tiene que ask me: ‘who is it’?”

“I already know que es una banana,” Grampo replied.

Canutito puso la cabeza en la mesa and just groaned, ¡Ay, Dios mío!”…
