COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ After a two-year absence, the Jesse Owens Classic was to resume Sunday with former Ohio State star and 400-meter world-record holder Butch Reynolds scheduled to compete.

''We're trying very hard to get it going again,'' Reynolds said Friday of the meet. ''It's got great athletes and it's free. What more could anyone want for Mother's Day?''

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Canadian sprinter Jillian Richardson-Briscoe remained in critical condition with injuries sustained earlier this week in a single-vehicle accident.

The 28-year-old Richardson-Briscoe's condition has remained unchanged since being admitted to Calgary General Hospital on Tuesday, hospital spokeman Dick Nichols said Friday.

Police say the 28-year-old Richardson-Briscoe and and her husband, William Briscoe, were riding in a small four-wheel drive truck that lost control and rolled when exiting from a city freeway. William Briscoe, who was driving, escaped with minor cuts.

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets placed pitcher Sid Fernandez on the 15- day disabled list, retroactive to May 1 because of a small cartilage tear in his right knee.

The Mets activated reliever John Franco from the 15-day disabled list on Friday to take Fernandez's roster spot. Franco was sidelined with a sore left elbow.

HONOLULU (AP) - Donald Doucette, the head coach at the North Carolina- Asheville for the past five seasons, was named head coach at Chaminade on Friday.

Doucette, who led Massachusetts-Lowell to the NCAA Division II title in 1988, replaces Daryl Lauderdale, who coached the team for two seasons.

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Mark Jordan shot his second straight 6-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Joe Shahady and Bo Fennell after the second round of the T.C. Jordan Tour's Sumter Classic.

Shahady broke the course record Friday with a 9-under 63 at the Lakewood Links Golf Club. Fennell shot a 64.

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - Harness driver Richard Wojcio recorded his 2,000th career victory, guiding Panhunter to a 5 1/4 -length decision in Friday's 10th race at Freehold Raceway.

Wojcio, 32, of Marlboro, N.J., competes daily at Freehold, the Meadowlands and Yonkers raceways.
