MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) _ Price Cobb took his Porsche 962 around Laguna Seca Raceway at an average speed of 119.551 mph Saturday to earn the pole for Sunday’s Budweiser Camel Grand Prix race.
Cobb, 32, of Dallas, Texas, took just 57.214 seconds to lap the 1.9-mile road course in the hills outside Monterey. He was just .024 seconds faster than Jim Crawford’s Buick Hawk, which will also start on the front row for the 2 p.m PDT main event.
Starting third will be Sarel van der Merwe and Doc Bundy, in the Chevrolet Corvette that had the pole for last weekend’s Los Angeles Times Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway, while German racing champion Klaus Ludwig will start fourth.
Taking the pole for the smaller Camel Lights class in the 300-kilometer, 98-lap event was Jeff Kline in a Pontiac Fiero GTP. Kline, 43, of Malibu, Calif. will team with Don Bell, 49, of Rolning Hills, Calif. Although Kline did the fast qualifying lap at a record average speed of 109.925 miles per hour, Bell will start the event. Kline will get into the car if there’s a yellow flag, and both drivers hope that there is one. ″We’re tied for points leadership,″ said Bell after the final qualifying session, ″and we’d like to keep it that way.″
Also scheduled for Sunday’s racing action at Laguna Seca are the IMSA International Sedans, the Formula Russell cars and the SPI-sponsored Formula Atlantic series.
