Scholastic Superstar Sean MacCallum

May 25, 2019

Sean MacCallum is not satisfied with simply excelling in the classroom. While he takes pride in finishing in the top three of his class and being selected as a student of the month, Sean’s most rewarding activities include volunteering with the Leo Club and the Dickson City Fire Department. “Both of these groups give me the opportunity to assist those in need and to give back to the community,” he said. He has helped organize blood, food and clothing drives, and as a junior volunteer firefighter, he also helps the department with fundraisers and benefits. With the goal of becoming a doctor, Sean filled his schedule at Mid Valley with challenging courses. He has held many leadership positions at school, including president of the Spanish club, president of the National Honor Society, vice president of student council, secretary of the Leo Club and section leader in marching band. He is also a four-year varsity member of the baseball team. In the fall, Sean plans to study biochemistry at the University of Scranton. The son of William and Tracey MacCallum, Sean said he admires his parents most. “They have always been by my side and have instilled in me the values of compassion, respect and responsibility,” he said. Sean said he sees every situation as a learning experience and a new challenge. “What is the point of living, if you don’t have a smile on your face while you’re doing it?” he asked. — SARAH HOFIUS HALL
