DJ Cipha Sounds the New MTV VJ

April 4, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) _ Cipha Sounds is spinning from DJ to VJ. The 25-year-old New York DJ will become MTV’s newest video jock, starting Monday. The move will be announced Wednesday on the music network’s ``TRL.″

Sounds has been scratching hip-hop records for about nine years, most notably as a member of Funkmaster Flex’s crew. He has hosted a radio program on New York’s Hot 97, as well as a show for Sirius Satellite Radio.

Those recent experiences, he says, helped him transition from a DJ enveloped in headphones who focused only on playing records to a more outgoing entertainer.

``Two years being a personality did more for me than seven years DJing,″ he told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview.

Sounds’ resume also includes a resident DJ gig on ``Chappelle’s Show″ and a brief part in Spike Lee’s 2002 film ``25th Hour.″

``My lines got cut, though,″ he says, laughing. ``Me and Spike Lee have a lot of beef.″

Hand-picked by MTV to be a new face for the network, Sounds says he admires VJs like Sway, who has also worked on the production side of the camera.

``I always wanted to be on MTV,″ he says. ``I have street cred, as you could call it, as a hip-hop DJ because I play the real music, but I always had a funny edge to me. I’m not like a grimy mix-tape DJ.″

He starts the new gig 7 p.m. EDT Monday as host of ``Direct Effect,″ which will begin a ``Sucker Free Week″ featuring numerous hip-hop guests.
