Memphis 33, SW Louisiana 19
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Twins Kevin and Keith Cobb combined for a touchdown on a blocked punt and fellow defender Keith Spann returned a fumble 29 yards for a score as Memphis took advantage of mistakes to beat Southwestern Louisiana 33-19 Saturday night.
Memphis (1-2) won in its home opener under first-year coach Rip Scherer.
The Memphis defense overpowered Southwestern Louisiana (1-2) throughout the game, playing a large role in the Tigers’ 26-0 halftime lead.
Memphis took advantage of a Southwestern Louisiana fumble for the first score of the game. Damon Mason called for a fair catch on a punt at the 37 but let the ball go through his hands. The Tigers recovered and scored three plays later on a 3-yard keeper by quarterback Bernard Oden.
Memphis scored again at 1:21 of the first period when Kevin Cobb blocked a punt by Southwestern Louisiana’s Mike Jones and brother Keith scooped up the ball to run 26 yards for the touchdown.
With 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Britton Wilkins shook the ball loose from Marcus Prier and Spann picked up the fumble and ran 29 yards to score.
Memphis scored again in the first half on a faked field goal from the 4. Holder Adam English flipped the ball to Chris Powers who went in for the touchdown.
The Tigers got their score on a 28-yard, third-quarter pass play from backup quarterback Joe Borich to Powers.
Southwestern logged its first touchdown in the third quarter on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Jake Delhomme to Brandon Stokley.
Southwestern Louisiana also scored on an 8-yard pass from Delhomme to Garrick Mayweather and 13-yarder from Delhomme to Jason Fletcher.
