Driver blacks out, crashes into Cumberland County town hall at 80 mph

May 9, 2019

A car plowed into a town hall in Cumberland County at 80 mph Wednesday night, authorities said. The driver suffered only minor injuries.

The driver, 45-year-old Anthony Tidwell, said he blacked out behind the wheel while driving down Fayetteville Street in Falcon just before 10 p.m. He then crashed into the Falcon town hall.

Troopers said that he had a reaction to something he drank but that alcohol is not involved.

Nobody was inside the building when the car hit it, going at least two-thirds of the way inside, troopers said.

Tidwell said he thought he was in his driveway when he regained consciousness.

“No one was around me,” he said. “I climbed out the back window and tried to find people. I didn’t know where I was.”

Tidwell’s hand was injured by glass, but he was otherwise unharmed.

“It feels good to be able to walk away from something like that,” Tidwell said. “Thank God I’m alive.”

Tidwell was charged with reckless driving.

Crews were still working Thursday morning to board up the front of the building.

The Falcon board of commissioners were meeting in the same building Monday night, also just before 10 p.m.
