200 Suspected Immigrants Arrested
SINGAPORE (AP) _ Singapore police have arrested nearly 200 suspected immigrants in the latest operation against illegal migrants from its poorer neighbors in Southeast Asia.
In an island-wide operation Thursday night, police raided coffee shops, construction sites and lodging houses. Those arrested came from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Many of them were working illegally at construction sites.
``The raids are part of stepped-up efforts to wipe out the illegal immigrant problem in Singapore,″ police said in a statement.
Last Friday, immigration, police and land department officers arrested 90 illegal immigrants during a 24-hour raid.
