Okla. State Treasurer Punched on the Campaign Trail

August 24, 1990

LAWTON, Okla. (AP) _ Democratic state Treasurer Ellis Edwards was punched in the jaw after he stuck a campaign sticker on a woman’s purse.

″This is election time. I guess some people get hot about elections,″ Edwards said.

Edwards, who is running for re-election, said he asked a man at a banquet Thursday night if he could put a campaign sticker on his clothing.

He said the man told him he was a Republican and did not want the sticker.

″I asked his wife if I could put it on her bag,″ Edwards said. ″She said, ‘Fine,’ and I did, and he became upset at that. I said ’If it upset you, I’m sorry.‴

Edwards and Allen Greeson, another Democratic candidate for treasurer, said Edwards bumped the Republican man moments later while passing out stickers on the next row.

The man shoved Edwards.

″At some point, that guy hit me. I wasn’t expecting to be hit,″ said Edwards.

Charges were not filed.
