May 27, 2000

THOMPSON, N.Y. (AP) _ A man who was on parole for burglary has been charged in the 1998 murder of a pianist who appeared in the movie ``The Godfather.″

Angelo Barbaria’s remains were found last year near this Catskill Mountains village. The pianist had lived in the region and worked at resorts there for 25 years.

On Friday, Samuel Van Dunk, 23, was charged with second-degree murder, accused of smashing the 67-year-old’s skull with a rock.

Barbaria’s sister, Gloria Fecher of New York, said she was told Barbaria had met Van Dunk and his girlfriend at a laundromat.

``My brother recognized him walking down the road and gave him a lift. They must’ve gotten into a terrible argument,″ she said.

Police would not discuss a possible motive.

Van Dunk was on parole for burglary at the time of the murder, police said.

Three days after Barbaria disappeared, his car turned up at a car dealership. It was identified by the vanity plate _ 88AB, for the number of keys on a piano and his initials. Police said fingerprints on the inside of a passenger window matched Van Dunk’s.
