Storms postpone, cancel basketball games
The latest round of winter storms led to the postponement or cancellation of several boys and girls basketball games in Northern New Mexico.
Five nondistrict games were cancelled outright because the regular season ends Saturday, and chief among them was the anticipated Pecos-Peñasco girls matchup that pitted the third- and second-ranked teams, respectively, in Class 2A.
The Pecos-Peñasco boys games, plus the boys/girls doubleheader between Desert Academy/Santa Fe Waldorf-Jemez Valley also met the same fate. The fifth cancellation involved the Mora girls travelling to Santa Rosa.
Meanwhile, the weather forced the rescheduling of several district girls basketball games, and most of them moved to Wednesday night. The District 2-4A co-leaders saw their games moved back a day, as Los Alamos will head to Taos, while Pojoaque Valley entertains Moriarty in Ben Luján Gymnasium.
In District 2-3A, Las Vegas Robertson will go to Raton on Wednesday, while the West Las Vegas-St. Michael’s game moved to Thursday night. All of the games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
The current storm system was expected to leave the area by Tuesday night, but that may be only a brief respite. The National Weather Service forecast for the North indicates a second snowstorm will arrive by Thursday evening and stay through Saturday afternoon.
There is a distinct possibility that if games are postponed over the weekend, the regular season would extend into the following week. The state dealt with a similar issue in 2015, when a weekend-long snowstorm during district tournament week forced those games into the first week of March and delayed the selection and seeding process by two days.
