A 63-year-old crossing guard struck by a Fort Wayne Community Schools bus at Vance Avenue and Reed Road has been released from the hospital, police said Wednesday.

He suffered injuries to his legs, Lt. Tony Maze of the Fort Wayne Police Department said.

The guard was standing in the middle of Reed Road at Vance Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, holding out his sign, when the bus hit him, according Maze said.

“He was getting ready to let kids cross,” Maze said.

The school bus was making a left turn on to Reed Road from Vance when it hit the guard.

The driver told police he didn’t see any children and did not see the crossing guard who was in a “blind spot,” Maze said. Neither the driver nor the crossing guard has been identified.

No schoolchildren were on the bus at the time, Krista Stockman, FWCS spokeswoman, said Tuesday. The crossing guard is an employee of the police department, she added.
