New York sugar bushes welcome visitors for Maple Weekends
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — About 160 New York farms, museums and other sites are holding “Maple Weekends” for the next three weeks.
The first Maple Weekend is Saturday and Sunday, with most locations open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are tours, demonstrations, product samples, maple recipes and pancake breakfasts.
Last year was the best year for maple syrup production in New York state history despite a short season following the harsh winter. Maple farmers produced more than 601,000 gallons of syrup from more than 2.3 million taps.
New York is the nation’s No. 2 maple syrup producer behind Vermont.
A list of sites participating in Maple Weekend can be found on the New York Maple Producers website (www.nysmaple.com ).
