Britain Unearths New 100m Star

May 21, 2000

LOUGHBOROUGH, England (AP) _ Britain’s latest sprint star, 17-year-old Mark Lewis-Francis, defeated European champion Darren Campbell and the Euro indoor 200m titlist Christian Malcolm in a domestic 100m race on Sunday.

Lewis-Francis ran the Olympic qualifying time with a personal record 10.25 seconds in blustery conditions at Loughborough with Campbell second and Malcolm third.

Although he looks likely to make the British Olympic squad, the teen-ager says his main goal is the World Junior Championships at Santiago, Chile in October.

``I’ll be focusing on the World Junior Championship, that’s where I know I can do well,″ he said. ``The Olympics would be a bonus but I probably will only do the relay.

``This year’s World Juniors will be my last opportunity to win the gold medal there whereas the Olympics will be around for many years to come.″

Campbell clocked 10.30 seconds and Malcolm, the current World Junior 100m and 200m champion, crossed the line in 10.32.
