Basquiat-tagged jacket fetches $9,100 at NY sale
NEW YORK (AP) — A leather jacket tagged by Jean-Michel Basquiat (zhahn mee-SHEHL’ BAH’-skee-aht) and other personalities of New York City’s 1980s underground art scene sold for $9,100 at a Manhattan auction.
The jacket was purchased by an online bidder at Swann Auction Galleries’ contemporary art sale Wednesday. The price was just under its pre-sale high estimate of $10,000.
The seller was the original owner, the stage manager of the legendary after-hours nightclub Danceteria from 1981 to 1986.
The auction house says he asked one of the club elevator operators to use the coat as a blank canvas for guests to sign.
Basquiat’s contribution includes schematic drawings and the words “breast” and “corset.” Fashion designer and artist Stephen Sprouse inscribed “Serenity Prayer” on the collar.
