WKU tops Marshall in volleyball

HUNTINGTON — Western Kentucky University women’s volleyball downed the Marshall Thundering Herd in four sets Friday in Cam Henderson Center. The 11 a.m. match drew a crowd of 1,057 spectators.

Western Kentucky’s 3-1 victory included scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 27-25. The Hilltoppers have a 13-6 season record and are 4-1 in Conference USA. Marshall is 8-11 overall and 1-4 in league matches.

Rachel Anderson led the Hilltoppers with 15 kills. Lauren Matthews and Sophia Cerino followed with 11 kills each. Payton Frederick and Darby Music had 17 and 16 digs respectively. Taylor Bebout recorded 26 assists.

Marshall’s Ciera Debell had 19 kills and Sarah Schank had 11. Gabrielle Coulter made 17 digs while Schank and Amber Weber both had 11. Coulter also had 39 assists.

The next Thundering Herd match is 1 p.m. Oct. 7 at home against UTEP.

Women’s golf

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Marshall is tied for seventh place out of 12 teams after Friday’s first round of the Princess Anne Invitational women’s golf tournament at Princess Anne Golf Club (par-70).

Shelby Brauckmuller from the Thundering Herd opened with a 1-over par 71 and is tied for 10th place.

UCF and Campbell share the team lead at 4-over par 284. Marshall shot 15-over 295. Virunpat Olankitkunchai from the Maryland Terrapins holds the lead at 5-under 65.

Other Marshall golfers are Jackie Schmidt (71), Stormy Randazzo (75), Ylva Forslund (77) and Kerri Parks (83).

The 54-hole tournament continues Saturday and Sunday.


HUNTINGTON - Marshall softball’s fall ball schedule continues with a 1 p.m. Saturday game with Fairmont State University on Dot Hicks Field. Admission is free.
