Junior League of Huntington kick off annual Soup Drive
HUNTINGTON — Huntington Junior League (League) President Carly Hackman today announced that the League will officially kick off its annual Soup Drive Saturday, Jan.12, at the Marshall University vs. Western Kentucky University men’s basketball game. League members will be accepting non-perishable food items or monetary donations during the game.
Since 2014, the League has collected more than 350,000 cans of soup for the Facing Hunger Food Bank, located in Huntington.
“For the past five years, the Junior League of Huntington has worked to raise money, food donations and awareness for the work Facing Hunger Food Bank does in our region,” Soup Drive Co-Chair Stacy Carey said. “This year, we especially thank Marshall University Athletics for allowing us to set up donation drives at all home basketball games during January and we encourage the community to get involved and donate.”
The League will have a table stationed at each men’s and women’s home basketball games during this month.
“When you have one in four children battling hunger in our region, clearly there is a great need to help these children and families and the league wants to do its part to help,” Hackman said. “Only $1 can help the food back to secure about seven cans of soup, so monetary donations have a great impact.”
The Facing Hunger Food Bank services 17 counties in the region, across three states. The food bank distributes food to more than 20 smaller agencies such as food pantries and food kitchens.
