Bonney Sentenced To Die In Slaying of Daughter
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) _ A man who said he was dominated by two of his 10 personalities was sentenced to death Wednesday for shooting his teen-age daughter and throwing her nude body down an embankment near the Great Dismal Swamp.
Thomas Lee Bonney, 45, of Chesapeake, Va., was sentenced to die Feb. 3, but the sentence is automatically appealed to the North Carolina Supreme Court. He was transported to Central Prison in Raleigh after sentencing.
Superior Court Judge Paul M. Wright also denied defense motions for a mistrial and a reversal of the jury’s decision.
On Friday, a jury convicted Bonney of first-degree murder in the slaying of Kathy Carole Bonney, 19, a year ago in November. Jurors deliberated almost seven hours Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning before recommending the death sentence.
Jurors said defense testimony of videotapes showing Bonney under hypnosis by clinical psychologist Paul F. Dell of Norfolk, Va., were not convincing.
The defense used the tapes to show Bonney’s alleged multiple personalities. But jurors said they believed Dell used leading questions.
Bonney joins more than 80 inmates on North Carolina’s death row. The last person to be executed in North Carolina was John Rook of Raleigh on Sept. 18, 1986.
